Our History
We acquired our first Havanese, Nena (Am/Cdn CH Sonrisas Nena at Old Havana) in 2012 from Rita Thomas of Sonrisas Havanese when she was nine weeks old. We are so grateful to Rita for breeding a healthy and the most sociable Havanese there is. Rita is also responsible for breeding MBIS MBISS MBINSS Can/Am CH Sonrisas Tiny Thomas CGN, who was the only Havanese to be number 1 all breeds in Canada for multiple years. Nena started her show life at the age of seven months at Forest City Kennel Club in Ontario, and won Best Puppy in Breed. This success carried on as she finished both her American and Canadian championships in a relatively short period of time. As a result of our nurturing love, Nena is a very a friendly and happy Havanese.
My husband Chris, along with my daughter Asia and son Luke - who are both attending University - are all involved in caring for our puppies and dogs.
Here at Old Havana, we provide our puppies with a loving home environment from day one to prepare them for their permanent homes. We expose our puppies to various stimuli to cultivate their growth, and nurture their curious minds, in a safe and loving environment. Our puppies go through extensive health testing such as BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response) for hearing and ammonia testing for liver shunts at the University of Guelph. Additionally, the puppies receive their scheduled vaccinations and microchip placements before they are placed with their forever homes. Our girls are extensively health tested before being bred as well. We perform genetic diversity testing on our girls through UCDavis in order to promote the well being of the breed. Health and happiness is a priority among our dogs that we never compromise.
